A 20-Year Umbrella: The Local Business Story That Proves Promotional Products Last

Some business relationships are purely transactional. You buy, you sell, you move on.

And then there are the ones that become part of the fabric of local life: built on trust, shared community, and the kind of consistency that only shows up over years, not months.

For us at BusinessGiftUK.com (the Wards), one of those relationships has been with Brian Pilkington Estate Agents in Leyland (the Pilkingtons). We are mutual customers, regular networking contacts, and two family businesses that have supported each other for decades.

The estate agency was formed in 1980 by Burnley and England football legend, Brian Pilkington. He was a pillar of the Leyland community and a stand at the Lancashire FA headquarters is named after him.

And recently, Helen Pilkington reminded us just how long strong relationships, and great branding, can last.

The Umbrella Story: A Brand Sighting 20 Years Later

Helen told us this story about one of the first batches of Brian Pilkington Estate Agents branded golf umbrellas we supplied:

“Crikey Steve! Where has time gone?

It was probably 3 or 4 years ago and I was walking to Tesco. I walked past the chippy, the first charity shop and the mobility shop but when I was walking past the 2nd charity shop near the pedestrian crossing I saw our Brian Pilkington Estate Agents branded golf umbrella in the window, so I went in and bought it, I think it was £2!!

I told the staff that I bought it the first time round 15 years ago!!”

We smiled when we heard it. Then we checked our records.

It wasn’t 15 years ago.

It was 20 years ago. We still have the order details and the original artwork on file.

That is the quiet power of printed promotional products when they are chosen well: they do not just “market” for a week. They can create brand exposure for decades, travelling through households, workplaces, cars, golf bags, and apparently even charity shop windows on the walk to Tesco.

Mutual Customers: The Relationship Goes Both Ways

What makes this story even better is that it is not one-sided.

The Pilkingtons have been long-term customers of ours for a range of practical, high-visibility items:

  • Keyrings
  • Pens
  • Golf umbrellas
  • Face masks during the Covid pandemic

And in return, our family has experienced the Pilkingtons’ service first-hand. Over the years, Brian Pilkington Estate Agents have sold three of our family homes, introduced us to another and we currently have a property on the market with them right now.

That is what “local collaboration” looks like at its best: you see each other’s work up close, you refer business because you genuinely trust the delivery, and you build a relationship that outlasts any single order.

Shared Local Ties: Sport, Family, and Community

This relationship has also been shaped by what makes Leyland and Lancashire business communities special: people are connected outside of work too.

Between our two families, we share local sporting interests across:

  • Golf
  • Cricket
  • Football

And in various combinations over the years, family members from both businesses have played together.

Those shared experiences matter. They create familiarity, and familiarity builds trust faster than any sales pitch.

Where We Still Meet: BB4B in Leyland

We still regularly see the Pilkingtons through the BB4B monthly networking group, held at the Lancashire FA HQ in Leyland.

Networking gets a bad name when it becomes a room full of business cards and forced conversations.

But when it is done right, it keeps local businesses connected, creates a rhythm of trust, and strengthens the local economy one relationship at a time.

What This Teaches (for every small business owner)

This story is not just a nice moment. It is a lesson.

1) Local collaboration compounds

When two businesses genuinely use each other, recommend each other, and show up consistently, the relationship becomes an asset.

2) Brand exposure can have a surprisingly long life

Digital marketing is powerful, but most impressions disappear in seconds.

A well-made branded product can stay in circulation for years, and sometimes decades, turning up in places you would never predict.

3) Family businesses win with consistency

Family businesses are built differently. The reputation is personal, and so is the pride in the work. That difference shows, and people remember it.

A Genuine Thank You

To Helen, son Jon, and the whole Pilkington team: thank you for your continued support over the years, and for being the kind of local business that makes Leyland stronger.

And if you are a local business owner reading this: invest in relationships that last, and choose branded products that people keep. You never know where your logo might show up in 20 years. Want to know more about Leyland’s award winning Estate Agents?
